Biographical note
Minas Borboudakis, born in Heraklion (Crete / Greece) in 1974, took his first lessons in playing the piano at the age of four. At the age of 11, he began his studies of piano and harmony theories with Georgos Kaloutsis in his hometown. From 1992 on he studied the piano with Olaf Dre?ler and Urzula Mitrenga and composition with Wilfried Hiller and Peter Michael Hamel. Borboudakis enriched his studies by attending numerous master classes with George Crumb, Luciano Berio, Wolfgang Rihm, Alexander Nasedkin and Rudolf Kehrer. In 1995 he received the "Richard Strauss -scholarship" of the city of Munich and in 2000 a scholarship of the Summer Academy of the Salzburg University Mozarteum followed. In June 2002 Borboudakis he has been awarded the 3. Prize of the "International Gunter Bialas Composition Contest".
As a pianist, Minas Borboudakis gave numerous concerts in Europa. He appeared with the Sinfonietta Belgrad and the Bavarian Kammerphilharmonic and gives concerts devoted to chamber music and vocal accompaniment. His repertoire is concentrated on own compositions and additionally in contempory music.
Borboudakis compositions have been given at numerous festivals such as "Munchener Biennale", the "Heraklion Sommer Festival", the "Musik im 20. Jahrhundert Festival" of Saarlandischer Rundfunk, the "Moskauer Herbsttage", at world exhibition "EXPO 2000" in Hannover and during Gidon Kremers new festival "les museiques".
Commissioned works have been premiered with famous orchestras, ensembles and soloists, such as Sinfonie- und Rundfunkorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Sinfonieorchester des Saarlandischen Rundfunks, Kammerorchester Schloss Werneck, the Eurus-Trio, Giora Feidman und Peter Sadlo.
Highlight of Borboudakis 2001/2002 season is having been "Composer in Residence" at the chamber music festival in Lockenhaus, where he performed his compositions "Kassiopeia" and "Chorochronos 1" with Peter Sadlo and Kremerata Baltica. The audience applaused enthusiastically.
His credo as composer is to combine elements of current and old Greek music with concepts and ideas of the contemporary music of Western Europe.
Minas Borboudakis is living and working as a composer and a pianist in Munich / Germany.
