Kostas Moschos - Composer, researcher, educator

Born in Athens. He studied advanced theory and composition with Yannis Ioannidis, at the Orpheion Conservatory of Athens and the N. Skalkotas Conservatory, while at the same time he attended Byzantine music lessons with Ch. Gerakopoulos, cello with Byron Fidetzis and electronic music with Stefanos Vassiliadis. Music with computers began to work self-taught in the laboratories of the Hewlett Packard Hellas.

He goes to Paris where he studies conducting at the Ecole Normale de Musique in the class of P. Dervaux, architecture at Ecole Special d 'Architecture and participates in IRCAM 's courses Pierre Boulez at the College de France.

Continues his studies in Germany: Electronics music (by Hans Ulrich Humpert ) and Algorithmic and Computer Music (by Clarence Barlow ) in Highschool for Music Cologne, Electronic Composition (by Dirk Reith) at the Institute of Music with Computers and Electronics (ICEM) at Folkwang University of the Arts, Conductor and Music Phenomenology (by Sergiu Celibidache) at the University of Mainz and Musicology with secondary studies Byzantinology and Phonology at the University of Cologne.

He attended seminars with Pierre Boulez and Steve Reich in Paris, Iannis Xenakis at the Center Acanthes, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Noam Sherif, Mauricio Kagel and John Cage in Cologne and Darmstadt.

He studied also "Adults Training" and "Special Education" at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

He taught music with computers as assistant at the Highschool for Music Cologne, as a tutor at the Folkwang University of the Arts, as a visiting professor at Music Basel Academy, (Electronics Music Studio class Thomas Kessler), while he gave seminars and presentations at the Darmstadt Summer Academy, the Athens Polytechnic School (Architecture), the postgraduate cycle of the Athens School of Fine Arts, with objective "Music and Image", the Music Department of Thessaloniki University. and IEMA. He also taught Music Pedagogy in many educational circles. During 2008-2013 has been in charge of the Department of Music Technology at the Athens Conservatory.

As composer has written 65 works for various types of ensembles, Theater, Children Theater, Dance, Cinema, performances and installations, which have performed and distinguished in many events (Utrecht festival, Bourges festival, Cologne festival, Darmstadt summer academy, festival Patras, Athens Concert Hall, Petra Festival etc.)
A special part of his artistic work concerns the extensive use of digital technology in music, or in the form of algorithmic music processing and synthesis of sound and structures, either in the form of live interactive systems, often in combination with other art forms such as image and movement.

As researcher Kostas Moschos is one of the pioneers of Algorithmics Music. He was the first in Greece to make music with computers, developing harmonic simulation algorithms in FORTRAN. In Germany after presenting his work "FFT analysis and synthesis in microcomputers" (in PASCAL) was appointed immediately assistant with teaching instruction in the new -then- Algorithmic Music class of Cl. Barlow. Since then he has presented dozens of works including MIDLIB (Pascal libraries and machine language for MIDI management), the live networking workstations via MIDI presented at ICMC 1988 etc. Teaches Algorithmic Music (initially in Pascal and Forth) while he was one of the first to teach MAX (since 1992) and later MAX/MSP.
Moreover, his research activity extends to musicology sectors. He made (together with Ch. Xanthoudakis) the first complete composer's work catalogue in Greece (G. A. Papaioannou), was member of the reconstruction of the ancient hydraulic organ, has carried out research work to upgrade music education, and was responsible for the project of Digitization and Promotion of the Greek Music Heritage while he was responsible for the European projects MINSTREL and SuCarMus.

As educator he started music education at the Higher Center for Pedagogical Research and Studies). On 1992 he published a study to upgrade music studies while from 1992-2004 was in charge of music in the "MELINA - education and culture" National program in the context of which he developed a new didactic approach to music. He was member of the compilation team for music books for primary school and secondary education (Pedagogical Institute) and music CD-ROM for Second Chance Schools (IDEKE). To date he has trained more from 3000 teachers. He is a Member of the Transaction Action Group in the "Major Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, Member of the Aesthetic Education team in the " Digital School " (Pedagogical Institute-Ministry of Education), Member of the editorial team of the New Music Studies Program (Pedagogical Institute). Currently he is a member of the "Education Redesign Team".

In terms of administrative activities, he was a co-founder (along with Marios Mavroidis and Haris Xanthoudakis ) of the Institute for Research on Music & Acoustics (IEMA) and since then a permanent collaborator and CEO until 2021. He was a member of the design team of Music Department of the Ionian University and the Music Gymnasiums, member of the design team of the National Cultural Network of Cities.

He was a member of the Board. and head of music at the Melina Program "Education and Culture", member of the steering committee of the Music Network of the "Territory of Culture" frame project, UNESCO expert on cultural diversity. He has officer at the International Association of Music Information Centers (IAMIC) in the positions of Treasurer, President and Administrator and now Honorary Member. He was member of the Board of the European Music Council and is Secretary General and Coordinator of the Athens Network of Museums and Cultural Institutions.

He is a member of the Union of Greek Composers and the Hellenic Association of Electronic Music Composers
